Bond 25 is the working title of the twenty-fifth film in the James Bondseries produced by EON Productions for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Like several previous films, Bond 25 will be written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade and will feature actor Daniel Craig in his fifth and final performance as James Bond.[4] The film will be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, with a projected release date of 8 April 2020.[3]´

Plot

Bond no longer in active service lives in Jamaica. His quiet life is disrupt when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA appears asking for help. The old secret agent will embark in a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist, then leading him onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.[5]

Background

Production

Pre-production on Bond 25 has reportedly started with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli producing the film. In July of 2016 Barbara Broccoli mentioned Bond 25 would likely be released in 2018.[6] On June 9th 2017, the film was said to be released in 2019 if shooting begins next year. [7] Speculation ended on July 24th 2017 with an official announcement that Bond 25's intended US release date would be November 8th 2019 with traditional earlier releases in the UK etc.[8] Consistent with previous 007 titles including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre, the UK release date is later confirmed to be October 25th, 2019.[9]

On 14th March 2018, British director Danny Boyle confirmed plans to handle directorial duties for Bond 25, during a screening of the filmmaker's 2018 television series Trust. Boyle confirmed that collaborative partner, John Hodge, is 'currently expanding an idea the pair had for 007 into a script.'[10] Boyle previously directed Happy & Glorious, a short film starring Daniel Craig as 007, produced by the BBC as part of the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony. The news was subsequently officially confirmed by MGM,[9] with production officially set to begin on December 3rd, 2018.[9] However, on 21st August 2018 it was announced Boyle had pulled out due to 'creative differences'[11].

On 14th September 2018, reports emerged that veteran writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade were rehired to produce a new script for Bond 25[12]. On 20th September 2018, it was officially announced that Cary Joji Fukunaga was confirmed to direct Bond 25, taking over from Boyle. It was also announced that the film's release date would be pushed back to 14th February 2020, with filming commencing on 19 March 2019.[1][13] On February 15, 2019, it was announced that the release date was again pushed back to 8 April 2020 in order to give Fukunaga more time.[3]

Distribution

Following the 2015 release of Spectre, Sony Pictures Entertainment's four-film contract to market and distribute the James Bond films officially expired.[14] While MGM and EON Productions are the studios responsible for producing the 007 movies neither of them is a distributor; hence necessitating a partnership with another studio that has that ability. Reportedly, Sony, Warner Bros, Annapurna, Fox and Universal are all pursuing distribution rights to the franchise, valued at between $2bn and $5bn (£1.5bn-£3.8bn), according to Hollywood Reporter.[15][16] Notably, MGM and EON are only offering a one-film contract to the victor.[14] On 23rd May 2018, it was confirmed that Universal Pictures had won the rights to internationally distribute Bond 25, with MGM releasing the film in the United States through a partnership with Annapurna Pictures.[2][2]

Craig's renewed enthusiasm for the role marks a change of mind after comments he made in 2015, which he explained as the product of exhaustion.[4][18]
